I hear you Michael, if the messages being sent out are not done with out thought and discernment they just become part of the noise, and isn’t useful to anyone. It IS a networking site, but maybe there needs to be some education on how to use networking in an appropriate manner. The spray gun approach simply does not work, and can be very annoying. The question then is, how shall we educate these potential spammers? I like the idea of Lou’s rant! but how about a challenge to the Facebook gurus out there, to set up some ettiquette guides to use networking on Facebook in a productive/constructive, rather than destructive, way!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for saying this. I’ve actually emailed people back and ask why they sent me something that is of no interest and they answered, “Well because you are on my friends list.”

Not a good enough reason people. Really.

It is definitely SPAM, as are the blingees and postcards. I deleted 57 off my wall one day. I know (some) people send them to stand out and send good sincere wishes, but it is out of control.

Michael,
It’s too sad to even contemplate for more than 10 seconds how much junk we all sift through to get to the “gold”. Remember when picking up the regular mail and looking through it was exciting? And then email….how exciting to be able to be in touch globally with friends from all over the world and now how important the spam software is for our sanity and computer’s health.

Not sure how, but one day we might be able to automate our “catch” of spam at Facebook. I see you have some “great minds think alike” company in Nancy Marmolejo: Facebook Event Spam: Please, Please Stop.

Relieved to see I didn’t mess up somewhere! I think a lot of people are still learning how to use social media & what the proper etiquette is. I think your examples of what not to do will help people avoid making the same mistake. Maybe examples of good solid posts would be helpful as well.

HAHA…I don’t know, Mike. I thought “Thanks Lee…yeah, seriously, right?” was pretty darned compelling and…oh, wait a minute…you’re not Lee!

Hope it slows down for you. It’s pretty distracting when there are messages in there that you actually WANT to get to and can’t even see them.
